Indiana Drug Schedules

Drugs in Indiana are classified into the following schedules:

  • Schedule I – This type of drug has a high potential for abuse and no currently accepted medical use. Schedule I drugs include heroin, LSD, marijuana, and peyote.
  • Schedule II – Schedule II drugs have a high potential for abuse and a currently accepted medical use. Severe restrictions may surround its prescription. Abuse of the drug could lead to severe physical or psychological dependence. Examples of Schedule II drugs include cocaine, methamphetamine, Dilaudid, Demerol, OxyContin, and fentanyl.
  • Schedule III – This category of drugs has a potential for abuse and a currently accepted medical use. Abuse of the drug could lead to moderate or low physical dependence or high psychological dependence. Examples of Schedule III drugs include ketamine, anabolic steroids, and Tylenol with codeine. 
  • Schedule IV – Schedule IV drugs have a low potential for abuse and a currently accepted medical use. Abuse of the drug can have a limited physical or psychological dependence. Ambien, Xanax, Darvocet, and Valium are Schedule IV drugs. 
  • Schedule V – There is a low potential for abuse of Schedule V drugs. The drug has a currently accepted medical use. Abuse of the drug can have a limited physical or psychological dependence. Cough preparations with codeine and Lyrica are Schedule V drugs.
